New Mobile Check Deposit Requirement

Restrictive Endorsement

With the advent of convenient and efficient banking mobile apps and other remote deposit capture technology, the nation's check collection system is quickly converting from all-paper to electronic. Remote deposit capture allows consumers and businesses to quickly deposit check from anywhere at any time, by taking a picture of the front and back of the check.

Since the actual check remains in the depositor's hands after a mobile deposit, regulators have found a national increase in check fraud.

Many financial institutions have already begun to make fraud attempts more difficult, by requiring a "restrictive endorsement." That simply means that anyone depositing a check remotely (remote deposit) must endorse the back with a signature (as always) and a note saying the check is for mobile deposit only.

Effective immediately, Century Bank and Trust is asking its customers to write the phrase, "for mobile deposit at Century Bank and Trust," when endorsing the back of any check for mobile deposit. Mobile deposits will be rejected after January 1, 2023 if the check lacks the proper notation in legible handwriting.

Example of how you will need to endorse your check for mobile deposit.

Mobile Deposit Endorsement FAQs

Is this a Century Bank and Trust requirement or will all financial institutions have this requirement?

This requirement is the direct result of a change to federal Regulation CC (Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks) and applies to all remote deposit capture services.  It affects all financial institutions, not just Century Bank and Trust.  Each financial institution establishes its own procedures related to remote deposit capture services.

Is this endorsement required on all checks I deposit at Century Bank and Trust?

No, this endorsement only applies to mobile deposits and is not required when you visit the bank.

Why is this endorsement required? It's so much longer than a regular endorsement.

We know the endorsement is long, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. This longer endorsement is being used to protect your deposits so that items are not accidentally presented a second time at another bank when they have already been deposited via Century Bank and Trust Mobile Deposit.

Can I use the check box in the endorsement area rather than using this new endorsement?

No, the mobile deposit check box and space for the date is for your record keeping and unfortunately does not meet the requirement for mobile deposits.
